How Reading With Your Children Helps Them Become Better Readers In a poll called "Reading Across the Nation: A Chartbook," conducted by the UCLA Center for Healthier Children, Families, and Communities for the nonprofit Reach Out and Read National Center, as put forth in an article dated November 1, 2007, by the University of California, "the national average of parents that read to their children is 47.8%." As if those statistics are not alarming enough, the article quotes Dr. Neal Halfon, director of the Center for Healthier Children, Families, and Communities as saying, "...states reporting the lowest rates of reading also report lower reading proficiency rates among their fourth-graders..." The poll focused on children from birth to age five.
