It was once believed that you could give birth to a baby, and one day (eventually), they would learn how to walk, talk, and eat all on their own. They believe that in time (usually around age 5-6), and child will naturally learn the alphabet and do some counting. If a child did not reach the level of maturity by school age, they were held out of school until they could reach the requirements.
